Conferences will take place on the afternoon of October 29, 2018 from 12:00-7:00pm. We are pleased to announce that all GES conferences will be student-led this fall. Allowing students to lead conferences is a research-based practice that empowers them to be active participants in the learning process. By preparing for and leading a conference, students become more accountable, take ownership of their learning, and develop the skills of evaluating and articulating their growth.
It is important to understand that a Student-Led Conference is much different than a traditional Parent-Teacher Conference. Rather than the teacher doing the talking, the student will take the lead! Students will be responsible for sharing Leadership Notebooks, reporting on academic progress, articulating goals, reporting on assessment data in the context of growth (when appropriate), and sharing samples of their work.
The role of the teacher in a student-led conference is that of a coach. The teacher will be present, but will only comment on specific questions or issues that the student is unable to answer. Please be advised that different grade levels may be participating in different models of Student-Led Conferences. Some grades will be hosting one student at a time, while others may have multiple conferences occurring at once. Scheduling will vary by grade level. Of course, if you would like to schedule a traditional parent-teacher conference, you may request to do so at another time.
At Goochland Elementary School, we are pleased with the learning and leadership we see from our students every day. We thank you for your involvement in the learning process. We hope to see you at Student-Led Conferences on Monday, October 29th. Please call the front office at (804) 556-5321 for information on scheduling a conference.
