Next week is Digital Citizenship Week, and it’s a great time to help our Otters navigate the digital world safely! Most kids will encounter some mean behavior online at some point. For some, it’s just a small ripple, but for others, it can feel like a big splash. As parents and caregivers, your guidance helps kids stay safe, stand up for others, and keep their online spaces positive.
Here are six ways families can help their Otters stay safe and kind online:
1. Define your terms.
Talk about what cyberbullying is: repeated, unwanted, or hurtful words or actions online—through texts, social media, chat apps, or gaming platforms. Knowing the difference helps kids recognize it and take action.
2. Check in about online life.
Just like you ask about meals, sleep, and playtime, ask your Otter about their online life. Who are they chatting with? Are people being kind in games or social media? A little curiosity goes a long way.
3. Role-play.
Practice how to swim away from digital drama! Talk through what to say, how to steer conversations in a positive direction, or ways to leave a stressful situation gracefully.
4. Encourage upstanding.
Being an “upstander” matters! If your Otter sees someone being bullied, they can safely support their friend or classmate. A kind message to the person being targeted can make a big difference. Teaching kids to speak up against unkind behavior is also important.
5. Take breaks.
Even the best swimmers need to rest! Help your Otter step away from screens when things get stressful. Set device-free times during meals, bedtime, or family time to recharge and focus on face-to-face connections.
6. Review worst-case steps.
Talk through what to do if your Otter experiences cyberbullying:
Swim away from the situation—sometimes ignoring the bully works best.
Save evidence by taking screenshots or printing messages.
Block the person responsible.
If it continues, report the behavior to a trusted adult. Make sure your Otter knows who those adults are and how to reach them.
By staying involved, having open conversations, and practicing safe online habits, our Otters can make digital spaces kinder, safer, and more fun for everyone! 🌊🦦
