Today, our school community proudly revealed this year’s Goochland Reads selection: Heartwood Hotel: The Greatest Gift by Kallie George. Students and staff gathered to kick off this beloved annual tradition that brings families together through the joy of reading.

The Greatest Gift is the second book in the Heartwood Hotel series and follows Mona, a kind-hearted mouse working as a maid at the hotel during a long winter season. As Mona navigates a demanding duchess, a mysterious midnight snacker, and unexpected disruptions, she learns important lessons about friendship, perseverance, and what it truly means to find home. With its charming characters and heartwarming message, this illustrated chapter book is a perfect choice for young readers and families to enjoy together.
This morning, students across the building took time to reflect on their own greatest gifts. Classrooms were filled with thoughtful conversations and reflections highlighting the many gifts we share, including family, friends, food, shelter, toys, and books. It was a meaningful way to connect the book’s theme to our students’ lives.
Throughout the month of January, families are encouraged to read one chapter each evening together. To add to the fun, students will hear daily trivia questions related to the book during morning announcements. Parents can also look forward to the return of weekly family trivia, which will be featured in Mrs. McCay’s Weekly GES Smore Newsletter, just like last year.

Finally, please mark your calendars for Thursday, January 29, when we will host a special after-school culminating event to celebrate our Goochland Reads journey. More information about this exciting event will be sent home soon.
We are excited to read, reflect, and celebrate together as a school community during Goochland Reads 2026!
