Summer Banner

At Goochland Elementary, we know that Otters are always learning—even in the summer! This year, we’re encouraging all of our Otters to unplug, explore, and connect. A summer without screens opens the door to imagination, creativity, and meaningful time with family, friends, and our community.

Let’s make this a summer full of books, outdoor adventures, kindness, and real-world learning—the Otter way!

📚 Otters Love to Read—Anywhere, Anytime!

Turn reading into an adventure! Build a cozy “reading riverbank” with blankets and pillows, read under a tree, or bring a book along on a trip. Read to a sibling, a pet, or even your stuffed animals!

While your child is reading, try asking:

  • Who is your favorite character? Why?

  • What do you think will happen next?

  • Does this story remind you of anything in your life?

  • What was your favorite part?

Every page is a new adventure—no screens required!

Families can also join local summer reading program through the Pamunkey Regional Library. Students can read books, complete a reading journal, and earn a free book during the summer program.

Summer Reading Kickoff Party

Otters Use Math in the Real World

Math is everywhere, especially when we slow down and notice it!

  • Practice Math Facts:
    2nd grade: addition & subtraction
    Grades 3–5: multiplication & division

  • Use Math at Home:

    • Measure ingredients while cooking

    • Count money and make change

    • Estimate while shopping

    • Sort and organize items by size, number, or type

Learning sticks when it’s part of everyday life!

💬 Otters Learn Together Through Play

Playing games is a powerful way to build communication and social skills! Board games, card games, and outdoor games help children practice:

  • Taking turns

  • Listening and speaking clearly

  • Following rules

  • Solving problems together

Family game nights or playing with friends are great ways to grow these important skills—while having fun!

💛 Otters Show Kindness in Our Community

Summer is a wonderful time to give back and spread kindness. Small actions can make a big difference!

Encourage your child to:

  • Write a thank-you note or draw a picture for a community helper

  • Help a neighbor or family member

  • Donate items or time to Goochland Cares

  • Learn about and appreciate our local heroes:

    • Goochland Fire & Rescue

    • Goochland Sheriff’s Department

    • Goochland Animal Shelter

Kindness helps our whole community grow stronger—just like our Otters!

🌿 Otters Are Curious Explorers

Learning doesn’t stop when school ends—it just looks different!

  • Go on a nature walk or scavenger hunt

  • Make up a story and draw it

  • Visit the public library

  • Explore a park or local space

  • Play, build, create, and imagine

The best learning often happens when we’re having fun together.

🎯 A Summer to Remember

Encourage your child to try new things, help others, and enjoy the simple moments of learning every day. These small experiences build confidence, curiosity, and connection.

🎉 Keep swimming, Otters!
We can’t wait to hear about your summer adventures, the kindness you shared, and all the new things you discovered—offline and out in the world!
