Megan Proffitt

On Friday, January 20, Dr. Jeremy Raley, Superintendent, and Mr. Michael Wright, Principal of Goochland High School, were joined by division leaders at Goochland High School where they surprised Mrs. Megan Proffitt, GHS math teacher, with the news that she is the Goochland County Public Schools 2023 Teacher of the Year.

A graduate of Sweet Briar University and the University of Virginia, Mrs. Proffitt has served GCPS in a variety of roles in a career that has spanned 20 years including as an instructional assistant and 2nd grade teacher at Goochland Elementary School, a substitute teacher, and most recently math teacher at Goochland High School.  Mrs. Proffitt is distinguished by her exceptional skills in working with students who struggle the most with math.  “Knowledge of math is a small part of what makes Mrs. Proffitt special on behalf of our students and community”, said Mr. Brian Hahn, Goochland High School assistant principal.  “She would not make those measurable gains in student growth and achievement without her uncanny ability to connect with and inspire students.  Megan Proffitt is truly one of the best”.

Mrs. Proffitt will now represent GCPS along with teachers from across the Commonwealth in the Virginia Department of Education Mary Bicouvaris Teacher of the Year competition.  She will also be recognized alongside the recently named school level teachers of the year, retirees, and division employee, team, and rookies of the year this May at the annual Goochland County Public Schools Evening of Excellence.

This year’s school level Teachers of the Year are:

·      Amanda Taliaferro, 1st Grade Teacher, Byrd Elementary School

·      Jennifer Carr, 3rd Grade Teacher, Goochland Elementary School

·      Katie Hadd, 4th Grade Teacher, Randolph Elementary School

·      Brett Alvis, Art Teacher, Goochland Middle School

“We are grateful for the work of all of our teachers and staff at a time when that work is more complex than ever”, said Dr. Jeremy Raley, Goochland County Public Schools Superintendent.  “Our teachers of the year represent the excellence, courage, creativity, honor, and optimism of our school and our community, and we are excited to recognize them”.
